We’ve all heard this request and lately we’re hearing it more and more. The following information is a good response when this request is presented:
All policies have a contractual obligation between the Insured (Patient) and the Carrier (Insurance Company) with cost sharing provisions (co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, etc) outlined. Policy holders agree to terms of the policy and, if they do not honor the cost sharing provisions there is a breach which could potentially impact their ability to maintain their insurance.
Many providers are beginning to advise patients of the same in their Financial Policies as a way to eliminate the request to forgive (write-off) the patient’s out of pocket obligations.
